Defining Terms

What makes me the unlikely marathoner? It starts with the fact that I don't exercise. I've recently started doing Pilates once a week, at a studio on the Upper East Side near where I tutor immediately after the class. But for the most part, I'm a sitter or a lier-down when I can manage it. I don't like running; I find it boring and pointless. But lately I've been thinking: what if I just did it? That sounded more Nike than was intended, but really, what if I were to drop what I think I know about my body and make something huge happen?

I started writing this over two weeks ago, and have been remiss in not posting the progression of my thoughts. So here's the condensed version:
  1. I continue to think about this every day.
  2. I have no idea of what my body is capable, but I'm awful curious.
  3. The combination of working in a goody-laden bakery and not exercising has not made me my most svelte self.
  4. I need some gear before I can think about doing this. Good way to put it off.
An acquaintance who recently ran the blistering hot Chicago Marathon suggested a book about marathoning for non-runners, and so I went online and ordered me this one. The author seems, if it's possible, even less athletic than I, which makes her inspiring, because she has run a marathon. She includes a training schedule at the beginning of the book for both walkers and run/walkers, which may prove helpful. At the very least, the book is informative and funny.
